UK Hallmark Requirements
In the UK, the law stipulates that any precious metal jewellery above certain weight thresholds must be independently hallmarked by one of the four UK Assay Offices. Here’s a handy breakdown of those weight limits:
o Gold:1 gram
o Silver: 7.78 grams
o Platinum: 0.5 gram
o Palladium: 1 gram
So, if your favourite piece of silver jewellery weighs over 7.78 grams, it needs that official hallmark. If it’s below that weight, it’s perfectly acceptable to simply engrave it instead!
