10 WAYS TO CREATE A UNIQUE SIGNATURE STYLE

10 WAYS TO CREATE A UNIQUE SIGNATURE STYLE

One of the most rewarding aspects of running a start-up in the fashion industry is the diverse range of roles I undertake each day. I am required to wear multiple hats and manage various responsibilities on my own. I genuinely see this as a benefit rather than a drawback; fostering a positive mindset equips me with a "can-do" attitude, which, I believe, lays the groundwork for accomplishing at least half of the tasks at hand. Moreover, this entrepreneurial journey provides a continual learning experience where no two days are ever alike, keeping my creative juices flowing and my passion ignited.

One key area where I’ve needed to improve significantly is styling, particularly when preparing for photoshoots that showcase AJOSEPO's unique jewellery designs. I always assumed that styling would be easy—especially as I love fashion and can style myself to look chic (if and when required). However, I’ve realised that styling others presents an entirely different challenge. There are countless factors to consider, such as understanding an individual’s personality—whether they lean more towards a romantic or realistic aesthetic. It involves assessing their comfort levels regarding fashion, body type, and colour preferences—whether muted tones or bold hues. Additionally, it’s essential to align the styling with our collective vision and the budget constraints we are working with.

Describing this experience as a learning curve would be an understatement. Nevertheless, it has been an exhilarating and creatively fulfilling journey that I have genuinely embraced. AJOSEPO has successfully represented a spectrum of styles, blending romantic and realist influences that cater to diverse fashion tastes. Having conducted several photoshoots thus far, I have compiled ten essential rules to guide anyone in achieving a signature style that stands out. I hope these insights prove helpful to you.

Love, Tofi Caroline Adedoyin xx

Rule 1: Reflect on Your Preferences
Identify What You Love: Begin by taking stock of the clothing, colours, and accessories that instantly boost your confidence and empower you. Do you gravitate toward classic elegance with tailored suits and timeless dresses, or do you prefer the free-spirited vibe of a bohemian aesthetic with flowing fabrics and eclectic prints? Alternatively, you may be drawn to bold, statement-making pieces that command attention. Explore these styles and determine what resonates with you the most.

Consider Your Lifestyle: Assess how your daily activities influence your wardrobe choices. A minimalist style featuring sleek lines and neutral colours may be perfect for someone with a fast-paced, on-the-go lifestyle, allowing for easy mixing and matching. On the other hand, those in creative fields might find joy in experimenting with eclectic combinations and avant-garde pieces that allow self-expression and individuality.

Align with Your Values: Reflect on your personal values and find ways to infuse them into your style. If sustainability is important to you, consider incorporating eco-friendly brands or thrifted items into your wardrobe. If creativity inspires you, opt for unique, artisanal pieces that tell a story and connect with your artistic sensibilities.Ajosepo signature style photo

Rule 2: Find Inspiration
Identify Style Icons: Discover style icons that encapsulate what you admire. Examine the fashion choices of influential figures such as Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, renowned for her refined yet understated elegance, and Tina Chow, celebrated for her bold and artistic approach to fashion. Look for common themes in their styles—perhaps a particular cut, colour palette, or type of accessory—and consider how they resonate with your taste.

Explore Fashion Sources: Browse reputable fashion magazines, such as Sheerluxe, discover the latest trends on fashion blogs, and follow style-savvy accounts on social media platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest. Creating mood boards that blend images of pieces you adore with colours and textures that resonate with you can effectively visualise your style.

Mix Influences:  Don't be afraid to blend styles to create something truly unique. Consider incorporating vintage finds with modern staples, mixing prints and fabrics, or layering different textures to form a distinctive personal aesthetic. This fusion will contribute to a style that's entirely your own.Ajosepo signature style photo

Rule 3: Identify Signature Pieces
Identify Key Items: Recognise the standout pieces in your wardrobe that you frequently gravitate towards, such as a versatile leather jacket, a tailored blazer, or striking statement shoes. These items often form the foundation of your style and can be paired in numerous ways to create a variety of outfits.

Experiment with Colours and Prints: Pay attention to the colours and prints that naturally draw your eye. Whether you prefer the warmth of earth tones, the vibrancy of jewel tones, or playful patterns like florals or stripes, let these preferences guide your clothing and accessory choices. This will help you create a cohesive look that feels authentic to you.

Create a Consistent Silhouette: Notice the shapes and silhouettes you are most comfortable in, whether structured and tailored cuts or relaxed and flowy designs. Incorporate these favoured silhouettes into your outfits to develop a signature style that flatters your body shape and reflects your personality.Ajosepo signature style photo

Rule 4: Prioritise Timelessness
Invest in Staples: Prioritise timeless wardrobe staples that will withstand the test of time, such as a well-fitted tailored coat, classic trench, or pair of high-quality jeans. These items serve as versatile building blocks for countless outfits and will remain stylish through changing trends.

Incorporate Trends Thoughtfully: While it's fun to embrace trends, do so in a way that aligns with your core style. Pick one or two trendy items to incorporate into your wardrobe. These items can be styled alongside your timeless pieces, ensuring your overall look remains authentic and cohesive.

Ensure Functionality: Remember that your style should be aesthetically pleasing and functional for your daily life. Emphasise styles that are comfortable, easy to wear, and appropriate for your activities. This will ensure you feel confident and at ease, no matter the occasion.Ajosepo signature style photo

Rule 5: Use Accessories to Personalise Your Look
Choose Statement Jewellery: Select unique jewellery pieces that reflect your style, such as chunky gold chains from our exclusive Troika Collection, which act as striking centrepieces and enhance even the simplest outfits. Consider adding rings or bracelets that combine textures and metals to create a layered effect.

Add Functional Accessories: To enhance your overall look, incorporate practical accessories like scarves, fashionable hats, and stylish bags. A silk scarf tied around your handbag can add a touch of elegance, while a well-chosen hat provides sun protection and a chic vibe.

Opt for Unique Details: Seek out personalised accessories, such as monogrammed handbags or vintage brooches, that can imbue your style with a nostalgic or bespoke touch. These items often tell a story or carry sentimental value, making your outfit even more special.Ajosepo signature style photoAjosepo signature style photo

Rule 6: Refine Your Colour Palette
Create a Colour Scheme: Start by identifying a selection of colours you are naturally drawn to and complementing one another. For example, you could pair classic neutrals with vibrant pops of colour or sophisticated earthy tones for a more subdued, organic feel.

Make It Cohesive: Aim for a balanced palette with base colours (black, white, or beige) and accent colours that add depth and interest. This approach allows for an integrated wardrobe where each piece can mix and match effortlessly, creating harmonious outfits.

Consider Your Skin Tone: Choose shades that enhance your complexion and make your skin glow. Experiment with a range of hues—warmer tones like mustard or olive might suit some, while cooler tones like sapphire or emerald could flatter others. Finding your best colours can significantly uplift your overall appearance.Ajosepo signature style photo

Rule 7: Perfect Your Fit
Fit Is Everything: Remember, the fit of your clothing is paramount. Well-tailored clothes will make a world of difference; consider investing in a skilled tailor who can alter mass-produced garments to fit you like a glove. A fitted blazer or custom-tailored pants can instantly enhance your silhouette.

Embrace Proportions: Understanding your body’s proportions lets you choose cuts and styles that accentuate your best features. For example, high-waisted pants can elongate the legs, while A-line skirts can flatter various body types by balancing the waist and hips.Ajosepo signature style photo

Rule 8: Consistency is Key
Keep Your Look Cohesive: To define your style, focus on a core set of pieces, silhouettes, and colours that resonate with you. This consistency helps create a signature look that feels thoughtfully curated rather than thrown together.

Stay True to Yourself: Prioritise what feels comfortable and authentic to you. Rather than being swayed by fleeting trends, choose garments that reflect your personality and lifestyle. This will ensure that your style remains true to who you are.Ajosepo signature style photo

Rule 9: Evolve Over Time
Allow for Growth: Recognise that your style will naturally evolve as you do. Embrace the chance to experiment with new trends or ideas, but always align them with your fundamental sense of identity.

Embrace Change: It’s completely natural to adjust your style as your life experiences and interests shift. Allowing your wardrobe to change with you can lead to exciting discoveries and fresh interpretations of personal style.Ajosepo signature style photo

Rule 10: Own It with Confidence
Wear It with Pride: Confidence is the ultimate accessory. Select pieces you love and resonate with your sense of self, regardless of how unconventional they may seem. Wear them boldly, allowing your inner self to shine through.

Embody Your Style: Let your clothing choices represent your personality through your outfits, body language, and attitude. When you confidently carry yourself, your style becomes a vibrant expression of who you are, making a lasting impression on those around you.Ajosepo signature style photo
