Miro and I often indulge in staycations in London, which might seem unconventional since we live in the city. However, we've found that this practice keeps our relationship vibrant and introduces a refreshing change of scenery that is essential for anyone. To add even more justification to our staycation choice, I typically opt for one of the hotels from the Soho Group, renowned for its unique charm and welcoming atmosphere.
While living in West London, we frequently enjoyed stays at Redchurch Town House and Shoreditch House, which offered distinct experiences that we thoroughly appreciated. Now that our home base has shifted to East London, I've decided to try out White City House for our latest getaway.
What draws me to the Soho Group hotels is their exceptional ambience; they genuinely feel like a home away from home. The warmth exuded by the spaces makes every visit comforting yet also refined. I deeply appreciate the meticulous attention to detail evident throughout the properties. Each hotel has a polished aesthetic that feels exclusive, ensuring a unique experience during our stay.
A particularly appealing aspect of staying at a Soho hotel is the access we gain to the associated private members’ club, either at the venue itself or nearby. The private members’ club offers a lively and curated mix of individuals who are often like-minded and sophisticated, enhancing the overall atmosphere of our stay.
That said, there are some drawbacks to frequenting a private member’s club. We often encounter the same faces repeatedly, and, at times, there can be an undercurrent of pretentiousness that’s hard to ignore. Nonetheless, this air of exclusivity can be an enjoyable change from the everyday norm, making our staycations not just a retreat but an experience that feels both exciting and elevated.
How I Secured a Reservation at White City House
To book a room at White City House, you generally need to be either a member of Soho House or a friend of a member. I fall into the latter category, as I am considered a friend. This status required me to pay a one-time fee of £100, which grants me exclusive access to hotel reservations and various other benefits. These perks include complimentary movie screenings, invitations to special events, and discounts at all establishments affiliated with the Soho House Group, such as Soho Home and Cowshed. Additionally, I also enjoy discounts at select curated companies that are not directly affiliated with Soho House.
How Much Was My Reservation?
For my recent overnight stay, I paid £195. It’s worth noting that the pricing for a cosy en-suite room at White City House typically varies, ranging from approximately £180 to £495 per night. However, Soho House often runs special promotions that savvy guests can use to secure a better rate, making it possible to enjoy a luxurious experience without breaking the bank. By watching for these deals, I could book my night at a price that felt right for the experience I sought.
How Did I Find White City House Hotel?
It left quite an impression on me. Nestled in the heart of the former BBC headquarters, an undeniable charm comes with staying in such a historic landmark. The architecture tells a story, and you are experiencing a piece of history with modern amenities. The hotel boasts an impressive array of features, including a state-of-the-art gym for fitness enthusiasts, a cinema for movie-lowers, a rooftop pool offering breath-taking views of the surrounding area, and a stylish bar designed with a nod to the 1960s—complete with retro-inspired interiors that transport you back in time.
As for the accommodations, my bedroom was both lovely and inviting. The decor struck a beautiful balance between contemporary elegance and homely comfort, making it a perfect retreat after a day of exploring. The bedding was exceptionally luxurious, enveloping me in a cosy embrace each night. I was delighted to find an abundance of complimentary toiletries and skincare products at my disposal, which added a touch of indulgence to my stay. The shower experience was nothing short of divine; I enjoyed using an array of Cowshed products, and the water pressure was fantastic, creating a refreshing experience.
However, only some things about my stay were perfect. Unfortunately, the food left much to be desired. I opted for burgers and fries, but I found the meal to be dry and lacking the flavour I was hoping for—it was far from delicious. This disappointing quality also extended to the dining options at the private member’s club. The food was consistently bland, repetitive, and uninspired, which was disappointing, especially considering the premium pricing.
Another area that requires attention is the sauna. Upon entering, I was greeted with a horrific smell indicating a lack of cleanliness; it felt like the space hadn’t been adequately maintained in ages. Naturally, this unpleasant aroma discouraged anyone from utilising the sauna, leaving it almost deserted.
Overall, while my experience at White City House Hotel had its highlights, particularly in terms of ambience and comfort, there are definite areas that need improvement, especially regarding the culinary offerings and the upkeep of wellness facilities.
How Did I Find The Private Member’s Club?
White City House stands out from the other Soho House venues in that it appears to cater predominantly to the BBC crowd. During my visit, I couldn't shake the feeling that the atmosphere leaned more towards a corporate environment rather than a creative one. The mix of people seemed less diverse and vibrant compared to other locations I’ve experienced.
The neighbourhood also contributed to my experience; it fluctuated between moments of quiet desolation and overwhelming crowds. This inconsistency affected the overall vibe and enjoyment of the space. Overall, I struggled to find anything particularly memorable about my time there. The stark contrast is evident when I reflect on my visits to other Soho Houses, particularly Shoreditch House. Shoreditch offered a much livelier and inspiring atmosphere, making it a more enjoyable experience.
Do I Recommend a Stay at White City House, And Would I Return?
I have mixed feelings about recommending a stay here. If you're considering booking and your budget exceeds £200 per night, I would advise against it. The accommodations left much to be desired, particularly regarding cleanliness. I found the shared facilities lacking maintenance, which significantly detracted from the overall experience.
Additionally, the dining options could have impressed. The food was bland and considerably higher priced than you might expect for the quality offered. As for the private member’s club, it felt uninspired and lacked a vibrant atmosphere, making it less appealing for those looking for a lively social setting.
However, I would reconsider this recommendation if you found a rate below £200. During the summertime, the venue does offer some redeeming features. You can take advantage of the rooftop pool, which provides a lovely escape for sunbathing and enjoying the warm weather. If relaxing by the pool and soaking up the sun is your priority, it could be worth it.
Ultimately, while I had reservations about White City House, some elements could make it an enjoyable stay if approached with the right expectations and price. I hope this reflection gives you the insight you need to decide.
