LAGOS CITY GUIDE

LAGOS CITY GUIDE

Lagos, the city where I was born and spent the first fifteen years of my life, will always hold a special place in my heart. Over the past three years, I have consistently returned to the city for Christmas, aka Detty December, and each visit has reignited my love for this vibrant African metropolis. Lagos is more than just a cultural capital; it is a sprawling megacity that dazzles with a diverse range of art, culture, cuisine, shopping, beaches, and much more.

The city is an endless source of inspiration, and I have put together a comprehensive guide to my favourite spots for dining, drinking, and exploring. It will inspire you to discover the magic of Lagos or give you some fresh ideas if you are already planning a visit.

Stay here!
Nordic Hotel Lagos
Whenever I visit, I always stay at the Nordic Hotel Lagos. It's a perfect little oasis located in the heart of the business district on Victoria Island. It's within walking distance of the city’s art galleries, cafes, shops, restaurants, and bars.

Eat here!
Nok by Alara
If you're looking for mouth-watering contemporary Pan-African dishes, complemented by an array of locally sourced beverages that are sure to tantalise your taste buds, this is the spot to visit. The music here also adds to the great vibe, creating an ambience that is sure to delight your senses. I adore this place.

XO Boutique Bakery
For tasty Nigerian doughnuts, head to this Victoria Island bakery. You will probably end up ordering two doughnuts like I did.

RSVP
Nestled in the heart of Victoria Island, this upscale restaurant is a culinary gem that offers an unforgettable dining experience. The menu features mouth-watering European continental dishes expertly crafted with the finest ingredients, while the cocktail list offers an array of stiff, creative cocktails. The atmosphere is simply enchanting, with its elegant decor, warm lighting, and charming ambience that exudes sophistication and comfort.

Drink here!
Vertigo
This location is one of the best spots for nightlife in Lagos. It features a VIP lounge offering a unique rooftop experience and panoramic views of Victoria Island. Vertigo also offers an extensive menu filled with the best handcrafted cocktails, wines, beers, and non-alcoholic beverages.

W Bar Lounge
I love this Ikoyi joint. If you're looking for a sophisticated and stylish spot to enjoy a night out, this chic restaurant, bar and club overlooking Lagos Island waterfront will hit the spot. Their Negronis are simply unbeatable, and I highly recommend trying one.

Mai Shayi Coffee Roasters, Lagos
Discovering this Victoria Island café was a revelation for me - they roast their own coffee and offer tastings before you buy beans. If buying coffee beans isn’t your thing, try their flat white, or order food like Miro did. Don't miss out on this spot if you're ever in Lagos.

The Flowershop Shop, VI
This is another café worth visiting for good coffee.

Touristy Loves
Art – Terra Kulture, VI
This is an arts and culture centre that exhibits live performances. I highly recommend watching a live performance here. I paid less than GBP15 for VIP seats to watch a musical, and it was a fantastic experience. I also had a delicious meal at the restaurant located in the centre.

Art – EbonyLife Place, VI
I suggest heading to Ebony Life to catch a movie. It's a great place to watch a film, and the best part is that it costs less than GBP5. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that the online cinema times differ from the actual screening times of movies here. But overall, it's worth a visit.

Landmark -Lekki Arts and Craft Market
This is an excellent destination for those looking to purchase souvenirs. The market is renowned for its diverse selection, making it challenging not to find something to take home. During my visit, I was able to acquire several stylish kitchen items, including a chopping board, salad spoons, and coasters.
I encourage you to partake in the Lagosian tradition of haggling with vendors to obtain a favourable price.

Books – Jazzhole, Ikoyi
This place is a record shop, bookstore, and café with the best collection of African artefacts on the continent, including records, books, and artworks. It also has a fine collection of titles from around the world and holds monthly art exhibitions showcasing African literature, music, and arts. Regular live jazz evenings are hosted, featuring performances from local and international artists.  I was so impressed with this place that I picked up several records and books and enjoyed a delicious carrot cake and coffee. I plan on returning in the future.
